Background check and an I.D.

Hey everybody. New to the board, and want to thank each and every one of you for all of the valuable information.

I have spent a few hours reading up on various guns etc. and have much more to learn.


Here is my question:

I just moved to Texas from Colorado. I still have my Colorado Drivers License.

Will this cause a problem with a background check for a new gun purchase?

I am wanting to pick up a new XD and am not sure if this is going to hold me back.

Yes. The dealer most likely won't accept it because they have to photocopy it to go along with your paperwork as proof of who you are and where you live should the ATF come knocking. If your legal address is no longer the Colorado address, your license is not valid in the eyes of a dealer or the ATF. Get your license changed and then head to the gun store.

Just save the hassle and get the new license/ID. When I moved to Florida it gave me problems and I'll promptly get my new license/ID after I leave Florida.

IIRC you have to have a current ID for the state you buy it in and most states require you to prove residency for at least 3 months if your ID issue date is lessthan 3 mo..(power/phone bill etc)

In Texas you can buy a rifle with your Colorado DL. Once you get your TX DL you can purchase a handgun that day. All they do is call the FBI for a background check. When you get your TX CWL no background check is done.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I am taking off of work early tomorrow to go get the Texas ID. Then, off to the Shooters Station!
