Illegal in rifles. They are referred to "Pistol grips" on rifles. Mainly on AR, AK or Shotgun rifles. It's illegal here in CA. I'm not sure about the state of Montana.
There are alternatives. Do a search on "Monster Grip" which is a rifle grip that extends to the stock. I hope this helps answer your question.

Maybe he means front end verticle grips.. U can't have 1 on the front of a pistol....
Yes, Federally speaking, no vertical foregrips on a firearm classed as a pistol. SBR is different, but that of course, requires the ATF tax stamp.
State laws may differ of course..

On a pistol, I believe it violates a federal law and is classified as an "Any Other Weapon(AOW)"(the term "any other" shows just how asinine it is as the government can't even come up with a catch phrase to demonize it) which requires a $5 tax stamp. Add a stock to a pistol(which is an antique technique/technology, mind you) and it becomes a "Short Barreled Rifle(SBR)".
