What is your favorite 9mm defense ammo?

Got a question. What is your favorite 9mm defense ammo?
I've been reloading since 1973 and have always carried my revolvers and autos with my reloaded rounds. A friend told me if I was involved in a self-defense shooting my reloads could count against me. So I'm looking to purchase a self-defense round. Boy are there tons to chose from. With pros & cons for each. Any help would be appreciated.

That doesn't make sense to me either. But the law allows you to use those ugly big hollow points that are called Defense Loads. I just use factory ammo, 124 gr FMJ RN, 9mm ammo. CorBon. Hmmm....

I carry 147 grain standard pressure 9mm rounds. Usually Federal HSTs, Speer Gold Dots, Remington Golden Sabers, or etc. (but pretty much in that order) I am stocked pretty good with HSTs right now.

Thanks guys. I posted this question on three forums. Although I had much better responses from the other forums I still want you to know the outcome of my unofficial favorite. And the winner so far is...
      Federal 124 HST +P

This is an old wive's tail when applied in generalities across the country, which means such a thing is largely going to depend upon in which state one resides, how their defense laws are set up, and what their case law directs. In some places this could be a very real consideration. In others, it wouldn't be an issue. Best to consult with an attorney licensed to practice in your state who is intimate in these matters and is not anti-gun. If defendants in your state are afforded an affirmative defense then what type of ammunition that was used should not be a problem.

Although SouthernBoy makes some very valid points, I still load my carry magazines with Golden Sabers.

I gave away all of my reloading equipment in 1998 so the ammunition I use, practice and SD, is purchased whole.

Federal hollowpoints across the board from .380 / 9mm to 10mm & .45 have very good results when tested according to the FBI formula of penetration and wound channel in balistic gelatin, there is a guy who does indepth testing of the various self defense loads offered by regular ammo producers and he posted his findings on you tube. Very scientificaly done, I seem to remember Hornady and Gold Dot were close behind. The standard velocity hollow points did every bit as well as the "Defense" ammo. If I find his blog or whatever it is I'll post a link to it here.
My only problem has been finding any on the shelves for sale. So I ended up with some other brand defense loads.
I fight shy of stuff called gruesome names like RIP or Zombie Slayer or any other juvenile sounding names that an attorney looking to roast my buns could use to sway a jury of my peers against me in a court of law. Remember perceptions are every bit as lethal to you as a lie in court or as in politics.
Stick with commercially produced and sold products especially if they have the words self defence somewhere in their name!

Here is one guy doing some good evaluations, but not the one I have in mind.

Ah, here he is, tends to be a bit wordy, but the tests and results are really good, so I often skip over some of his chatter and zero in on the results. Sometimes known as "Ammo Quest".

This is what I'm presently carrying just because I wasn't able to find any of the Federal.
The Guardian Gold 124GR JHP, which did pretty well.

Any of the HST or Ranger T 147 but I have seen that the Winchester Defender win in a study with a gun with a 3 inch barrel

He has done a lot of different tests, I suggest you check his playlists to see which ones he has done.
I sort of stopped after finding out about the results from Federal.
It used to be you could buy the regular Federal hollow points and they performed as well as the fancy HST stuff and you could get a box of 50 for what you had to pay for a half box of the "defense" loads.
Then all of a sudden they disapeared from store shelves, I wonder why?
      Gabby

I just went and watched his test of the Winchester Ranger 147gr loads and I see it penetrates more. I personally want a load that transfers all its energy in the vitals where it does the most good.
My fat old gut measures about 13" from front to back and a load that goes beyond that is wasting its energy going thru the appartment wall and perhaps causing grevious injury to a small child sleeping in its bed.
So it's up to you whether you really want all that extra penetration or not.
      As I've said I don't.
If you are hunting big game an exit wound will help the critter bleed out quicker and leave a blood trail, but that's not what we need here. We want to stop the fight QUICKLY!
That is the whole reason for making expanding bullets in the first place.
We are trying to get better results from smaller caliber bullets in order to get the same affect you get with a big heavy slow moving round such as the 44 special, 45 Long Colt or the 45ACP, which really thump the hell out of the target!
      Think about it.

I do too, both 9MM and .45 ACP. My old Federal Agency uses it, so I can't go wrong.

Frankly, I don't see enough difference in defensive ammo to worry too much about it.

But If you're concerned about the legal issue side, see if you can determine what the local police carry. In my area I believe they were carrying Speer Gold Dots when I checked, so that's what I use.

Mas Ayoob mentioned this very topic in an article published in American Handgunner. I may originally have come upon it many years ago while reading "In the Gravest Extreme", but not sure:

"The suggestion has often been made that you should find out what your local police agency carries for ammunition, and then load the same stuff into your concealed carry and defense guns. That way, any opposing lawyer painting you as a malicious sadist for using hollow nose “dum-dum” bullets would run up against your solid defense: you were carrying the same ammo as the cops he works with daily. Are they malicious sadists, too?
I didn’t come up with the idea, but I like it in theory."

The ccw class I was in had some case studies. So when the victim's lawyer asks "what type of bullet did you use" or a more likely question "why did you load your weapon with killer hollow point bullets", if you can safely answer with "I use the same ammo as the police, gold dot".

The life you save may be yours.

I always carry manufactured rounds, gold dot. All others are for practice.

There was another sad case with hand loads.
