I have an itch. I am thinking about another striker fired 9mm
I like the Ruger sr 9( it makes a few lists I have ready about combat 9s) . I also just read about a kahr TP9
not sure which is better. I can and will test drive the ruger at my range this week. I cannot do the same with a kahr. So I am turning to the trusted opinions on this site to offer up info and opinions on which is a better shooter on the range. They are not going to be carry guns, just range toys
The Ruger has a nic e in trigger safety. Kahr has an unusual set up where the trigger cocks and releases the striker. Otherwise I have read very similar things about these 2 weapons as far as reliability and accuracy. How about customer service? any thoughts?
I have experience with five different Kahr models, still own a K-9 and a K-40 (all steel), and the only issue I have with them is that the trigger is engineered for people with small or medium sized hands. All five were accurate and reliable, although some folks have had reliability issues in the first couple of hundred rounds. The PM and P models have very tight tolerances that often require extensive break-in, but usually settle into a good reliability. I like them, but they just don't fit me very well, and the P, PM, and K series have a hefty price tag. The CW and CM models are competitively priced, and all you are giving up is the polygonal rifling and some expensive machine work that doesn't add anything to their function. I've never seen the TP model, but I think it fits into the same category as the P-series.
I've fired a couple magazines through the original SR-9 that belonged to a guy who wanted to sell it to me. It shot OK, but I liked it less than the XD I used for the same function, and I didn't like the magazine safety, nor the lever safety. He offered me a good deal, but I didn't buy it. Chalk that up to personal preference, I suppose. I favor XD and Glock platforms, in a medium to full sized self defense pistol.
I own a PM9 and used to have an SR40. Which gun you want to buy depends on what you want to use it for.
The Kahr is single stack with good self defense trigger. My feeling is gun is too big for deep concealment and doesn't have as many rounds as a double stack. If you like it as a range gun, go for it.
The Ruger is a nice shooting gun. These would be near the top of my list but for 2 features. SRs have magazine disconnect. The gun won't fire if there is no magazine in the gun. This feature can be disabled. It also has a terrible small safety. These 2 features make an SR a poor self defense or action shooting gun. It's a fun plinking gun.
I can only speak on the SR9, I have 1 and it is a real shooter. My Son is always breaking my balls about how I never miss the clay birds on the pistol berm at our range. The berm is at 20 yards. It is a fun gun to shoot, and through 5+years of taking it to the range every time I went (probably a couple thousand rounds worth) it has been foolproof. If I didn't have so many others to choose from, I would not hesitate to make it my carry gun. Now that think about it, I'm going to pick up a 17 round magazine for it on Tuesday now that I am out of New Yorkistan!!
Depends on what you want to do with the gun? I saved some cash and had my heart set on a ruger SR1911 but changed my mind for one reason: I wanted a range gun that I could shoot a lot and not go broke doing so. .45 ammo is a little pricey to be blowing through a few hundred rounds a session. I ended up buying a S&W PC 9MM with the ported barrel. Its a dream to shoot and tons of fun. Saving for a red dot sight for her.
