    best 9mm round

    ok so I'm needing to know what would be the best kind of round for my 9mm that wont just go straight through someone cause I live in a very crowded neighborhood? I want to find something that is gonna penetrate through the clothing and go deep enough to stop the attacker with 3 shots max and not exit the body and go into the neighbors house

    Predetermining a situation where one needs to use a weapon is impossible to predict......

    What ammunition to use falls in line with what weapon to use..... Comes down to each and everyone has there personal preference....... For self defense, normally hollow point ammunition is the preference among concealed carry people......

    I am sure you will get some posters giving you their personal preference.............

    This is impossible to guarantee. You may get lucky and not have to fire any shots. Or maybe just one. Or perhaps nearly the entire magazine. There is no way you're going to know how many are going to be needed in an extreme encounter. You're simply asking for the impossible.

    As far as best loads for the 9mm pistol, that is largely subjective even when the data tends to show that certain loads are better than others. People have opinions, preconceived notions, and just plain hardnose ideas about what is best and what is not. Heck some still call expanding bullets dum-dums, as hard as that is to imagine.

    So to offer some sort of answer to your question, I propose that you reframe it along something like these lines;

    "To those who use a 9mm pistol for home defense, keeping in mind penetration of persons and dwellings, what is or are your preferred load or loads for that pistol? Can you offer your reasons for your choice or choices?"

    With this question, my preferred loads are either the Federal 124gr +P HST or the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P JHP. Currently, my home defense gun is loaded with the latter.

    I would agree with the SouthernBoy 100%. Also, I would not use a bullet that is designed to break apart. For home or personal defense, I believe you will not find a better bullet than the Federal HST or the Speer Gold Dot. I would recommend standard pressure or +P b/c both are going to perform well for you. I would also go with the 124gr bullet b/c 147 is designed to penetrate deeper.

    Another good round for personal/home defense is the Hornady Critical Defense (NOT Duty). Critical Duty is a great round, but it is designed to penetrate barriers, and if you're concerned about that then the Defense round is better for you, but my top recommendation is the Federal HST 124 grain. I might even suggest the standard pressure since the +P is a little hotter. You can't go wrong with this bullet.

    Steer clear of the RIP ammo. Lotta hype, but it's no good.

    I like the HST the most either 124 or 147 doesn't matter if it is +p or not followed by the Gold Dot 124 +p then Ranger T 147

    The RIP ammo makes pretty patterns in ballistic gel, but none of the much vaunted (and very expensive) trocars the manufacturer is so proud of is going to reliably penetrate enough to bother with. Now, if they could delay the separation of the trocars of the main body of the slug for another 8-10" they'd have something. As it is, the only significant injury from the RIP ammo will be from the very small core, since that is the only piece that actually penetrates. And that will be about the same as shooting them with a small caliber FMJ slug. Not ideal...
    Our default round is the Hornady Critical Defense. Not just for 9mm.
