Anybody tried 9mm+P in the lighter compact guns?

Just picked up a Ruger LC9s today. The manual said occasional +P use would not harm the gun. How much recoil do you pick up with +P? Looking at Federals catalog there is only a 50 FPS gain in velocity. Is the 50 FPS gain worth the extra recoil and extra wear and tear? With standard loads the recoil in the Ruger while not brutal is in no way pleasant. Starts to smart a little after a while. This is not a fun range gun. +P might start some bad habits for all I know.

Never tried +P in anything I have owned. I would love to hear about someone else's experience.

I've shot +P in compact guns, and the recoil is slightly more, but not unmanageable. You are right about the LC9 not being a fun range gun. It is intended for personal defense. You may have a more pleasant range trip with a Glock 26 or M&P Shield. The thing about +P is that it can wear out the springs and internal parts quicker than standard pressure ammunition, but unless you're shooting hundreds of rounds per month, it really isn't a concern.

Ruger makes a nice little gun, but I don't own any simply b/c I don't consider them to be "professional" grade. Not to knock them at all! They are great guns for the money, and the intended purpose, but they really aren't made to handle heavy volume shooting like your top tier guns. You should be OK to carry +P for your EDC defense round. I just wouldn't shoot them through it all the time.

A particular loading is a personal choice. In my opinion good standard pressure 9mm loads are as good as any.

Gold Dot, HST, Ranger, Hornady, Golden Sabre, etc... all make very good standard pressure loads. If the round makes it a minimum of 12 inches and expands through denim and ballistic gel you are good to go.

Why beat your pistol and your hand up when you don't need to? Shot placement is paramount followed by a load that will do it's job. Go with a good standard pressure would be my advice.

One caveat is the length of the barrel and the rounds ability to expand the desired 12 inches of penetration in gel. But there are standard loadings that do just fine in this department.

I've shot it in my Kahr PM9, circa 2005 model. No problems and the recoil is not a real factor.

+1 to SB. The Kahr is a much better choice for a pocket gun. It has a less expensive brother, the CM9. I don't know why, but they handle recoil better than the other little guns I've shot. I can shoot my Kahr almost as well as I can shoot my Glock 19.

I too have owned a CM9, but now carry the MK9. I have owned most of the popular subcompact 9s and I like Kahrs the best. The MK9, while the same size as the cm/pm9 is sort of in a different class because it's all steel and a good deal heavier. That being said, I carry Golden Saber 124 or 147gr +P and the recoil is fine. With a good belt and comfortable holster I hardly notice the gun and I love the look and feel of the steel pistol.
