What's your second favorite source of gun infomation?

Obviously we've already established everyone's favorite source of gun information (HandGunForum.net), but where else do you go to check out stuff about guns?

I'm an eager newbie looking to learn as much as possible, and have been somewhat disappointed with some of the magazines I've read. Maybe I'm just not patient enough for the next issue to come out, but I'd love to find more.

I'm primarily interested in handgun shooting for fun not self defense, but those topics do also interest me. An in-depth introduction to proper gun care, shooting technique, and the like would be very cool. :smt1099

Do you owen a gun?

Not yet.

I don't really have a purchasing time frame in mind, but am interested in probably starting with a 9mm that me and my fiancé can both enjoy shooting. We've tried a small variety of handguns to date, and our favorite has been the Beretta 92. I'd like to learn more before proceeding though because I want to be certain before making a move.

I also really enjoyed shooting a Walther PPK .380 and a Springfield Armory 1911 .45, but she did not like either as much as the Beretta.

Well, I cruise all the gun forums online, and I pick up info there - I don't really rely on the gun magazines too much - their reviews of any gun are always pretty much the same. They don't wanna say anything bad for fear of their sponsors. So...

I just read the magazines at the store on occassion to kill time while waiting on my wife.

I with Ship, I hit several different forums. I do however get two mags, American Rifleman, as my NRA membership mag, and I won an American Hangunner subscription at the first of the year. It is a little dishearting to read a raving review for that new Kimber then turn two pages and see a full page add for the very same gun.
You kind of have to wonder about their objectivity.

If you get serious about a 1911 try M1911.org.They have about the best (non flaming) info available about almost any make or model.They are VERY strict about bad language so keep that in mind.There is a guy (1911tuner) over there that could fix just about any ailment your 1911 could get with a little info about the problem.....:mrgreen: :mrgreen:

+1 With Scooter. They nailed me for calling Clark a NUT. Oh well. I got an alert notice. I been on alert for about 2 months now. Guess what Clark is still a nut.

Welcome to the club. Like others here I tend to take magazine articles about guns with a grain of salt. They never seem to say much bad about them. I too like to cruise other forums and I’ve included two which I go to often. The Glocktalk not as much as I use to. I spend more time here. I shoot a Glock 23 so like to see others opinions on Glock related issues.

I will probably get a 1911 someday as my primary carry but until I’m willing to give out twice the money than what I paid for my Glock I’ll carry my G23. It’s a great gun so I’m fine with it. Just ugly in a cute sort of way.

I'm with the vast majority here, I check out the on-line gun forums. But, for a new handgun owner you have to be careful. Keep in mind, if one wants to belong to any forum, all it takes is an email address. No expertise in the sport or product. Some information is way out in left field. Some can be dangerous. And a lot is OPINION only. Other info is valuable and should be followed. I wish I could tell you to simply walk into your local gunstore for advice. But, not all gunstore employees are knowledgable of different guns. If I could give you one piece of advice I'd tell you: research and research more. With the internet search engines you can find tons of information. Many articles and data written by gun experts. Oh, one more thing. Be careful if you decide to visit a gun show. I'm not cutting down the shows, I've gone to several. Just observe and keep your ears open and listen. Use common sense and protect your money. Watch out for the "impulse" buy. I've been around handguns since the 70's as a LEO. But, I am in no way an expert. I always ask questions of other gun owners. The only difference between you and me is I can spot an unexperienced shooter at the line. What we both have in common is we are still learning about firearms. Good luck. Remember...a gun is ALWAYS loaded, treat it as such. And, keep the muzzle pointed down range at all times.

Other than here, and WaltherForums, I get alot of my info from talking to people in person, wether it be at the gun store or the range or at a bar, wherever. I find this to be a good way to get honest opinions about guns, unlike mags and such. :-)

I find experienced shooters the best source of information. Join or frequent a gun club or range if you can and start asking polite questions. Most shooters will be only too happy to share what they know; just try to get them to shut up! If you know someone who shoots, ask to go with them, if only to watch. Take the NRA Basic Pistol or Rifle course of instruction; it's not expensive and the instructor might be able to provide a firearm to use if you don't have one. Ask, Ask, Ask.

I do forums, I check out the sites for each company from time to time to see what's new, and sometimes I just google the name of the gun if it is something specific. I've seen some really unbiased and well done reviews of just about everything that way.

Ya gotta watch out for the gunshop "commandos" tho........should be easy to recognize them,they know everything about every firearm ever made or prototyped and will tell ya all about it,whether you want them to or not:rolleyes:

I used to hit thehighroad.org and thefiringline.com quite a bit, but the signal-to-noise ration has gotten out of control on both. There are way to many blowhards and idiots on both sites. I use them when I wat to sell something, any that's about it.

For gun-specific info, I use ar15.com and glocktalk.com, but once again you have to dig very deep to get useful info. Lots of goobers and internet commandos on both.

Browsing through the many gun forums is absolutely the best way to get educated about all subjects regarding any kind of guns. Just remember all gun owners are prejudiced toward their favorite type of firearms.
Another site I find useful is www.gunblast.com. Good honest revues and comparisons by Jeff Quin and company.

I check out quite a few Gun Forums; among one of the best, in my opinion, is the Sig Forum. Lots of knowledgeable people there, and they will talk about any guns, not just Sigs.

For online reviews, try GunBlast.com

Just like most here I rely primarily on several gun forums. You read them often enough and you learn who's opinion you can trust and who's .02 cents is worth less than .02 cents. But the worst place for running into know it all commandos are the guys that hang out in gunshops. You would think it would be just the opposite, but it seems like every shop has its resident know it all with tons of bad advice. :neutral:

Thank you all for the helpful information. A lot of my assumptions about the magazines and listening to certain people in gun shops sound like they're pretty right on unfortunately. I'll keep reading up on all the forums, and seeking out info in other sources when they sound good. :smt1099
