Recently came in possession of a 32cal auto with very few markings and cannot determine manufacturer. Looking for help.
Slide marked "AUTO MODEL" and below that on body is "1440". No other markings except bottom of handgrip has "SPAIN" stamped in it.
In The post WW1 period there were many companies and individual s making 32single action autos. the best identification book that I have is "spanish Handguns by Gene GangarosaJr" 2001 Stoeger.
The rugged spanish pre Spanish Revolution .32 acp usually worked but were so varied in manufacturer that it was really hard to identify them. A lot of these were reportedly sold to the french in that period but I have never seen one of these military marked. I have handled more than a dozen over the years and most were from different manufacturers.
Tanfoglio, aka EAA Witness and some other brand names, are Italian made guns.
