Observations

I dropped by the gun counter at Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday and observed a young lady showing pistols to a prospective customer. The young lady looked to be college age, early twenties, and fairly athletic. Just an awfully nice looking young lady.

The thing I noticed was how familiar she was with the guns stocked there ansd willing to show the customer the models he asked about. There were a few questions she referred to a young man working there, who knew about as much as she did. But when asked about DA only vs SA only she was ready to answer or tried the gun itself to determine the answeer.

If she had any shortcoming in this role it was in arm strength, as she at times had to exert a second, or third, effort, to open a slide.

She was helpful, friendly, and willing to spend time with a prospective customer. That, in itself, is a rarity nowadays.

Rather refreshing to see.

And, yes, I kept my mouth shut.

One of the troubles in these larger gun stores is the sales people are on a comission. After they get to know you or you have bought from them, their more than helpful. That's if they even know anything about guns. I like to buy at a small shop but sometimes their a $100 bucks higher than the big stores. They just can't compete with them. I have to think about every buck I spend as I am on a fixed income. I can afford a few dollars more but not the big bucks.

Man, I wish I had your Sportsmans Wherehouse - the guys who work at my local one can't tell a handgun from a hole in the ground.. and that's if they'll even acknowledge your presence as they're busy BS'in with each other. I've looked at guns there about 5 times (I won't buy there - just look - since the selection is big and the service is poor), and of those 5 times, on 4 occasions I watched other customers give up on being waited on and walk away in disgust.

I always buy from a local guy up the street, his prices may be a tad higher, but I feel better supporting a decent friendly small businessman.

There are two Sportsman's Warehouses in Memphis, neither related to each other. One is a Bass Pro operation, the other is headquartered in Utah. The one I referred to was the latter, a Utah Corporation.

This just for clarity only, and not reflect on the Bass Pro Shops. But the latter company carries a more complete line of reloading items and components. I've been treated equally well by both. And patronized both. The local gunshops I patronize, but they don't, and can't, carry the line like a larger store.

Bob, this isn't clear to me at all. Bass Pro Shops is an entirely different company than Sportsman's Warehouse.

I see where you got confused, the Bass Pro Shops is called "Sportsman's Center".

The sign at the BassPro shop here reads "Sportsman's Warehouse" and is the third establishment that I know of here in Memphis to bear that name. None of the three have been related.

I'm sure some of you are famiular with Dicks Sporting goods. A little over a year ago they purchased Galyans Sporting Goods. They then made the very un-wise choice to quit selling handguns and certain longguns. The only thing they carry are what the owner classifies as 'sporting arms' WTF????? This is why you'll never see in a Dicks Sporting Goods. I'll spend my money in Gander, Cabelas. There are no BassPro near me.

I haven't bought anything there in awhile, but the last receipt I had read "Sportsman's Warehouse." Haven't been there lately, but I recall the old yellow and green logo sign had Sportsman's Warehouse over it.


At any rate, there was some local confusion when the latter one opened up.

At any rate, there was some local confusion when the latter one opened up.

I've had pretty good luck at the Sportsman's Warehouses here in MN. There are only two of them that I patronize. One is in Coon Rapids, MN and the other in St. Cloud, MN. The one in St Cloud is a bit more "stuffy" and it's sometimes difficult to get any attention. The Coon Rapids store is way more service friendly. At least both of these stores have somewhat knowledgeable staff at the gun counters.

You really had me curious there for awhile and I went to the Yellow Pages of our phone book:

Bass Pro Shops Sportsman's Warehouse is the way its listed. This under "Sporting Goods."
