Its better if you are using for home defense.
I always just buy Federal eagle or red box if its just for targeting. Red Box Fed is going for 17.00$ at walmart and is definitely worth it. Cheapest I've seen.
Is the Hornady Critical Defense HP .45 worth the 20 for $24.00 vs Standard HP .45 50 for $20.00
How much better is the Hornady Critical Defense over the Standard HP

Horandy is definitely better for carry. Packs a punch
My compact 1911 doesn't like to cycle many hollow point bullets, but the critical defense cycles just fine. Shoots the CD ammo very accurately also. The shape of that bullet is similair to ball ammo that the gun was designed to shoot. In addition, the 185 grain critical defense opens up when fired through a 3 1/2 inch barrel. Finally, the ammo is readily available in the gun shops where I live. These are the reasons that I buy CD ammo for my 45 acp. I'm not saying they are better than other HP, just better for my gun.
Hornady Critical Defense has my vote. IMO it's a great ammo with a lot of quality, very well put together ammo.
