I'm looking into purchasing a 40cal for a range gun. I don'town a 40 of yet but do own a .22lr (BM), a 9mm for carry, and a .357 mag for hunting. I have a 45acp in layaway now but ammo for it has been really hard to find unless I go to Dicks or Gander Mtn and both places are really expensive for ammo. Even at our Wally World finding 9mm or 45 is a real adventure. On the other hand they always have alot of 40 ammo in stock and thats why i'm leaning towards a 40 cal. I have a M&P9 now and really like the M&P but I want something a little different as well. I narrowed it down to two and wanted to see if I could just get some thoughts on them. First is the FNP 40 at 549.00+tax, second is the XDM 40 at 549.00+tax. Just in case I decide to stay with the M&P what are your thoughts of it in 40 cal.? 499.00+tax w/thumb safety. Thanks for any input.

Since you already have a nice collection some very useful handguns, I would suggest something a little different from what you already have. Something to spice up the collection a bit, IOW.

Get something metal, with a hammer. A 1911 of some kind, or perhaps a Sig, or even better a CZ. An EAA Witness Match would be nice, as would a Browning Hi-Power (I think they come in .40).

Well I finally decided on which to get. I went to the store and tried them all on again and I ended up with the M&P40. The others were all good choices but the M&P felt best. My wife said next year I can think outside the box again and i've already decided it will be a 1911 this time. Thanks for all the input you folks gave.
