In all of my recent shooping for a handgun I totally forgot about having one of my Grandfathers old pistols. This was supposedly taken from a german soldier somewhere in Europe. It is 9mm and appears to be a SA 1911 style pistol. Can anybody help me out with an ID ?

so it appears I have the Star model B, although I am not sure what the PATR 08 marking means, they dont show that mark on your link. Is this something that would be worth cleaning up and putting into my shooting collection? Would it be safe with modern era ammo? Thanks for the link!

I wouldn't fire anything through it until it had been inspected by a smith and you make darn sure which 9mm caliber it is...Quote:

I would take into a gunsmith or gun shop and have them look at it, they can you if it's safe and more history about it.
Yeah..Getting a gunsmith to check it out couldn't hurt. It is well worth keeping for the age alone. I sure wouldn't mind one in my safe.. heh
Well I will certainly take it to my gunsmith to check out before I fire it. it looks to be in fine mechanical shape, although I dont know enough about pistols yet to take it down and clean it. I will get my smith to show me that when I go. The PATR 08 mark is a chamber designation- this pistol is the 9mm luger versus the 9mm largo, whatever that is. This pistol has no real sentimental value to me- my grandfather did not care for it at all, and I have lots of his other guns that meant a lot to him and me as well. Maybe I can find a shop willing to take it in on trade towards a new Kimber, which is pretty much what I have decided on getting. It is old though- the proof marks indicate that it was cleared from the proof house in 43. Of course once it is cleaned up and checked out it may turn out to be a stone cold shooter in which case I will keep it and shoot it!

I noticed Spanish proof marks, which would be correct for this gun, of course.
Are there any German/Nazi markings on it? If there are, its collector value would probably skyrocket.
Perhaps the "F PATR.08" (relating to the 9mm "Luger" cartridge) denotes acquisition by the German Army ordinance or supply department. I suggest that you find out.
The F Patr 08 is the German abbreviation for "Fur Patrone 08", meaning "for cartridge 08" (Luger 9mm parabellum).
if you look at the bottom of the grip, near the mag well, you'll see a 6 digits serial number. It should start with 2xxxxx. Could you please let me know the first 4 numbers of this serial number? It will help me identify this pistol.

Gotta watch Pawnstars! Almost every other week on this show someone comes into the pawn shop with an item to sell that they "cleaned up" to make it look better. Most of the time the items looses at least half of its value after aging has been removed....not that your going to sell it, but...
No I meant the inside, and I know about the aging=value thing. Once I figure out what I have I'll make a decision on what to do with it. If I sell it I will leave it as is, if I keep it I will probably black ice it, and restore/replace the grips. This might make a really nice addition to my battery.Quote:
