Which ammo do you guys prefer for home/self defense?

As previously stated I got 2 boxes of shells with my new xd 45...I shot 1 1/2 boxes so far just testing my gun out. The bullets they gave me were Magtech 230gr ...Id never heard of magtech before, but ive been outta the gun game for a while. Just wondering what youd recommend, without starting a riot LOL. Also Ive heard tell that the winchester SXT's are pretty good and are the same exact bullet as the old black talons, just without the coating. Im looking for something with good stopping power, yet wont put my children/wife in danger due to over penetration.

Just about any modern hollow point - as long as you test it in your gun for accuracy and function - will give acceptable performance.

I would also add that any of these has the potential of going through one or more walls. Since you are concerned about over-penetration, you might look at the frangible designs such as the Glaser Safety Slug.

I prefer to use the following brands:

Cor-Bon, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady XTP, or Talon.....however, with all the shortages and empty
shelves, I will take whatever I can find as far as defense ammo....as long as it is a good,
name brand Hollow Point, you should be good to go, and make sure you test out a couple
of mags worth thru your weapon.

I use Federal HydraShok's in 147gr for my 9mm, 230gr for my .45.

I use Magtech First Defense...It has a 100% solid copper bullet, with a hollow core. The advantage as claimed by the manufacturer is weight retention of the bullet (i.e. not loosing any fragments upon impact) and thus maximum energy. I hope I won't have the need to use it, I bought two boxes of 20 each..Tried one box in 3 of my handguns and they all liked it (10 rds in my SIG P6, 5 rds in GLOCK 17, and 5 rds in CZ 75 COMPACT PCR)..The second box is kept for home defense purposes.

However, whatever you are planning to use, make sure you try in your gun and verify yourself that your gun is OK with it.

That's good advice. However, 5 or 10 rounds is not near enough to function test a SD weapon.

As you can tell by fal's pics any of those will do the job, provided you hit what you're aiming at. You need to test several brands and find out which ones are the most accurate and function best in your particular weapon. Even the same model guns will be different with ammo brands. What works in my sig, for example may not in yours.

I agree with you James..A minimum statistical threshold must be attained..I'll try to shoot more of this ammo in my guns to reach that statistically accepted threshold. The only thing is the price of this ammo is more than double regular range ammo, but I guess the objective of SD justifies the price difference, specially when my life and family safety dictates it.
