In the market for a replacement Handgun

I bought a S&W Sigma but sold it a month ago to pay for a vacation. I had planned to get a new gun soon plus I did not like the gun all that much. So now I am in the market for a new handgun and I need some suggestions. It's primary role will be home defense.

Things I'm looking for:

- DA/SA with a safety
- 9mm or .40 SW
- Under $500 or possibly a little more
- Comfortable grip for a woman(wife)

The sigma had a very heavy trigger and my wife thought it was too heavy. She also wasn't to comfortable with the .40SW because of the recoil. Hopefully a 9mm will be better for her.

UPDATE* Something with a SA option but doesn't really need a safety

DA/SA w/safety are not found in great numbers. The ones that come to mind are the FNP9, CZ85 (and probably the 75), and Taurus 24/7. The safety of the Taurus will also de-cock the weapon too, if desired. My wife finds the CZ and Taurus to fit her just fine. I also think that these, along with the Walther P99, fit my hand better than any other service handgun.

The S&W M&P and the Springfield XD's can also be had with safeties, but are not DA/SA. You might also look at the older Ruger P-series handguns. I don't care for them at all, but I think they fit your criteria.

Take a good long look at the Beretta Px4 9mm. They come in several different models to get EXACTLY the combo of options that you would like. It is a polymer handgun so it will not be heavy and the 9mm has minimal recoil.

Check out the Stoeger Cougar. My wife (and I) loved shooting it due to very little recoil. Very nice gun for very little money.

If your wife didn't like the recoil of the 40 but you like the round check out something with a steel frame or at least some kind of metal. I have a 229 Sig Sauer that handles the round really nice. Also a P16 Para. Neither of those fit your criteria being the Sig does not have a safety and the Para is a Sa 1911 type weapon but the weight makes the .40 round a good bit easier to handle. If you can get past the no manual safety thing (sa weapons really don't need them. Look at any revolver) A CPO Sig Sauer is worth considering. They make a fantastic weapon and can be had around 500-550. Ter are several to look at in 9mm, .40, and 45.

A lot of people will say this would be a hard bill to fit but I think there are more options out there than most think.

The Cougar is a great suggestion.

Others, which I am surprised were not mentioned, are the FNP9/40 and the CZ-75 variants. Note the FNPs come decocker-only and decocker/safety...it may take some looking to a weapon find both. CZs on the other hand, are either decocker-only or safety-only (aka 1911 style). Both of these come in around $550 if you know where to look.

THe FNP being a poly frame might have more flip than the wife would like. The ability to change the back strap is a major plus though. Really I'm not sure why I didn't think about that. I must have forgot my Geritol today.:smt082

SA equals single-action. SA's do in fact need a safety, at least the semi-auto versions. Also, the revo's that I would bet you are thinking of are DA (double-action), which don't need safties.

I think a Sig is a great idea, as I too would not count on the presence of a safety lever....

Sig 2022 in 9mm. Lightweight, user-friendly recoil, SA/DA with decocker. Uhhh, let's see, what else... oh yeah, ITS A SIG!

I dont really like safeties(I don't want to have to think when I pull the gun:rolleyes:)! ...unless you're tlking 1911, then its just natural!!!

S&W M&P9 is what you should try. It has 3 different size grips so both you and the wife can pick the one that fits them best. Easy to change and it's a great little gun in your price range.

I've looked at a few guns and i decided it doesn't necessarioly need a safety but I would like a single action option. So far I've like the SiG p229 in 9mm but for some reason i was drawn to a kimber 1911. Maybe that will go into private collection :mrgreen:

I would look at the M&P9. They make one with a frame mounted safety.
