I was working in the garage today and thought if I needed something best I could put my hands on is a shovel. So I was thinking of getting an inexpensive gun to leave in my tool box (locked of course). Would have to be something that did not require much maintance and could be left for long periods of time. Maybe a revolver? Any suggestions.

You could always consider carrying something with you there.
If not, get a glock. Inexpensive as guns go, reliable, cheap, low maintenance.
Locked or not, garages are not secure. Someone breaks in and steals your tool box and, what do you know, tools AND a gun! Bonus day for the the thief. I second just carrying. If the gun is in a locked toolbox and you need it, how quickly can you get it? Even if the box is unlocked while you're in the garage, what if you're on one side of the garage, the gun is on the other, and you need the gun?
That being said, if you must have a garage gun, I'd say revolver.
get alittle j frame or ruger lcp or something and toss it in your pocket when you go in the garage.
I keep a BB gun in the garage. I'm more concerned with encountering a snake or an animal in the garden out there than an intruder.
I have one on me at all times so it makes no difference where I am at. Unless you unlock the tool box everytime before you open the garage door you will never get to it if ever need it. JMHO.

Isn't the best kind of gun to leave sitting around a revolver? Don't semi magazine springs eventually compress and malfunction if they aren't exercised periodically?

my "shop/fishing" gun is my jennings j-22 semi auto. its a .22 cal. and can be had new from a pawn shop or gun show for around 100-125 bucks. and who ever said glocks are cheap.......its the only 550 dollar piece of clothing i own buddy lol
