First Semi-Auto pistol

Was shopping last weekend for my first pistol.

Here is what on my list right now:

1 Glock 17 (used $400)
2 Sig P6 (used $350)
3 S&W Sigma 9(new $299)

Please help me to chose one :D

Delete the Sigma and add the XD. Just my .02

Look around for a used S&W M&P. Ditto delete Sigma.

Try to get the Glock for less, those SIG P6's could be lower also, ditto on forgetting the Sigma, and might wait for the next gun show.

The Sig P6 only has 8 in the magazine, and you can find them for $299 from dansammo.com.

Ditto on adding the XD :)

All three are decent to excellent pistols. I'd choose the Glock based on the trigger action, which is lighter than the Sigma's and more consistent than the SIG's.

I have yet to hear a really positive report on a Sigma, +1 on XD

Paid $300 for my P-6 out the door including holster, soft case, 2 mags, blue case & lock at a gun show. You see it as my avatar. Manual is downloadable from SIG.

If cost is an issue, the Sigma is a good choice. It is reliable and ergonomic though the trigger needs to be worked with a good amount of dry firing to loosen it up. But, as a new pistol owner, a good bit of dry firing is a good idea. Of the other two, I'd go with the Glock. I like a consistent trigger pull shot after shot so the DA/SA of the Sig is not for me and I think it inhibits first time shooters. You should be able to score a used Sigma for $225.

Rather than tell you to get something else, I will try to address the three pistols that interest you.

The Sigma is actually a pretty decent pistol. It is reliable and accurate, but it does have one notable deficiency and that is it's heavy trigger pull. If that is all you ever shoot, then you won't know the difference. However, odds are you will not like it. For home defense use, it would suffice. For range use it will suffice as well, as long as you understand the trigger limitations.

The P6 is a classic, and in my hands more accurate than my Glock. They too are reliable, and will make an excellent range gun. I think a pistol with a decocking hammer is a good choice for a beginner, as it is easier for you to quickly determine what condition it is in. On the other hand, if you want a handgun for defense or perhaps even carry, it would not be the best choice of the three because of it's lower magazine capacity and the fact that you *might* have feed issues with hollowpoint rounds. Plus, it's a lot of pistol to carry around for only nine shots.

The Glock would make the best choice if you are going to use the pistol for defense or carry. Of course you can use it at the range too, and in fact would make a fine range gun. Glocks are boringly reliable and adequately accurate. The advantage of the Glock is that you can find aftermarket parts very easily. The ergonomics don't suit everyone, but if it fits your hand well, then I'm sure you would do fine with it.

Bottom line: Sigma if you are poor, P6 if you want a fun/range gun, and Glock if you want a pistol for possible serious "social" uses.
