Are there any drone pilots here?

I was given a DJI Phantom 3 Standard UAV for Christmas this year. I didn't have any idea that i wanted one, or what the heck I would do with it if I had one. Sooo I sat down at the computer and went to work on learning all I can about it.

This little quad copter has a 25 minute +- flight time, the operable radius is advertised at 1 kilometer. It has a 1080p camera that takes amazing pics and video. Here's a shot I took last night.

If any of you has experience that will help me keep this bird out of trouble I would appreciate hearing about it.

I just posted on the thread Snow, snow, snow. I have a Phantom 2 and I find the camera to be excellent. The Wi-Fi is ok but it doesn't take much for it to drop out. I would imagine the new ones are a lot better. Mine is good for 800 meters, give or take. We have a lot of deer in the area and they don't seem to mind it hovering above them. I added the prop protection kit which helps a lot for the occasional rough landings. As I noted on the other thread, I would like to fly it down the rifle range and post the video on our gun clubs website. In 2015, I was flying it every other day and was getting ok with it but no-where near as good as the aero modellers do with their units. Take your time and try everything. I enjoy it.
Of course more rules and regulations are coming out all the time because some people are idiots.

My brother bought one a while back. You have one of the best models/brands(i.e. intelligent flight) as long as you are going forward and have it in standard mode it stops itself within 10-15 feet from hitting anything. That doesn't work for reverse and sport mode, however.

If you get into trouble just take your hands off the control and it stabilzes itself and at that point going up above any threat is what I do. It is basically idiot proof to fly. Just don't get out of range and heed the warning of low battery. Likewise it has a go home mode that automatically sends it home if its the same model.

Thats about what I know about it.

I expected that response. To be honest I felt the same way until I started flying the thing. The thing that I didn't realize is that the drone pilot will most likely have the video via wifi that will convict the shooter of whatever crime the local PD comes up with.

I don't want to annoy anyone with this thing and will go way out of my way not to. I just want to take some great pictures and videos and have a little fun along the way.

      Federal Drone Registration

$25 to register with the feds is a bit steep for a toy. I wonder where the politicians are squandering that money?

I work with a kid who has the exact same model. after work one day he gave us a demonstration of what it could do. I was completely amazed that you could own something so sophisticated for a reasonable price. He used his phone ,attached to the controller, and was able to produce a live feed of what the drone was seeing. The pictures are amazing. It will stabilize itself in one spot using GPS, it will return to where you launch it using the same. It was just amazing to me. Have fun man. I know he talks about firmware upgrades you can get as well. Have fun man.

Here's a little video that I made with my $400 shotgun target. Turn up the volume a bit and enjoy the view.

      If it flies.....it dies.

Seriously though, I can see a lot of good that a drone can do. But like most everything else now-a-days, there are those who will take advantage of them and their capabilities and use them inappropriately.

      Just human nature...........

Very nice landing. I found it easier to land with it pointing away from me, especially on windy days. With it pointing away, the control levers and the drone move the same, left is left and right is right, same for forward and backward. The picture quality is great.

The drone was actually doing most of the flying in that shot.
