I'm thinking an air rifle would be sufficient - and the report doesn't sound like gunfire. Not as effective as a shotgun, but shotgun fire attracts attention.
Not as much potential for collateral damage as a 40mm - or even a 37mm cannon.
These drones are not too expensive and anybody can get one. I'm a private Investigator and we just had a seminar. Another PI was showing us his drone he bought for surveillance. Only cost $500. However we all noted it had big flashing red and green lights on it, which make it kinda easy to see.
Don't think I'll get one. I've done several thousand hours of surveillance. Kinda boring, but I'm good at it.

I think the ideal anti-drone unit would be a quality slingshot and a foot of light chain, the type that is used on toilet flappers. If it touches a rotor blade it's bye-bye, if it misses there is no worry about hurting anyone!
Now that we have drones becoming a common sight and issue, someone needs to invent a non-firearms type device that uses gas or compressed air to shoot a small, weighted net from a barrel.
This device would need to have at least a range of several hundred feet, maybe up to 1000'. You see a stinking drone over your house, out comes your device, you take aim, pull the trigger, and instantly, the net is quietly deployed, and down comes the drone.
I would not hesitate if one was hoovering over my back lawn....
