Man shoots, kills intruder

MONTCALM - A Mercer County man shot and killed an intruder who used a brick to gain access to the man's rural home in the Buttermilk Junction section of the county.

Adam Lee Bennett, 24, of Falls Mills, Va., was dead at the scene of the shooting according to Cpl. D.W. Miller of the Princeton Detachment of the West Virginia State Police. Bennett died as a result of a single gunshot wound to his "upper right chest area" from a .357 magnum pistol.

Miller and Trooper L.F. Keaveny, also of the Princeton Detachment, were dispatched to the home of Rodney Hendrick at 11 p.m., Wednesday night. "As a result of our investigation, we discovered that there was an attempted break-in at the Hendrick residence," Miller said.

"Mr. Bennett smashed a window out of the front door to the Hendrick residence and apparently ran away," Miller said. "He came back in a short time and struck the door with a brick, knocking it open. He then stepped inside the residence where he was shot."

Miller said that Hendrick, 64, called 911. "He said someone had entered his residence and that he shot at him," Miller said. "He didn't know if he had hit the intruder or not at the time. He then went outside of the house and discovered Mr. Bennett in the driveway. Mr. Hendrick came back and called for an ambulance."

Miller said that the Hendrick home is relatively new, "about two years old" and is located on a 68-acre parcel of land with only one nearby neighbor. "He and his wife were asleep," Miller said. "His wife heard the glass shatter. That's what caused him to investigate."

Miller said Hendrick was not arrested, and added that the investigation is ongoing.
