maybe something that happened caused management to reconsider their longer term goals????????..............................

Hostess filed for bankruptcy in 2012.

The plant's employees were stunned by the news, Donald Woods said. He is president of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco workers and Grain Millers International Union Local 1.

"They were working like 12 hours, six days a week, and they were looking for this plant to be a part of their future," he said, adding that the workers voted in May to rejoin the union. They had been told the company planned to keep the plant open long term, he said.

The bakery had just reopened a little over a year ago as Twinkies returned to store shelves after Hostess' bankruptcy.

they may have been able to reopen the business down South. Not as much "mandatory" overhead imposed by outside organizations.

Yup, that's why I put in in bold in my response. They just "rejoined" the union........... sounds like they went through the first bankruptcy and tried to reorganize on the premise that the union wouldn't be involved with the reorganized company. Well, guess the employees shot themselves in the foot., so to speak. Just sayin.

Since Twinkies have such a long shelf life, I would bet that production will shift to Maylaysia, or China or somewhere in East Asia where labor cost is much lower. Another batch of American (union) jobs gone overseas because the union bosses are nothing but greedy idiots who bring nothing to the membership other than eventual loss of jobs. What is the union that they rejoined doing for these folks now with the upcoming closure?

Labor unions can be corrupt , but not all are corrupt. Management is a union. The working person should have representation also.

Political unions have their share of corruption also , Republicans , Democrats.
