    Becoming More Alert Doing My Thing

    I have noticed that I am becoming more aware of my surrounding as I go about my daily routines. Everynight while walking my dog, I always scan my surroundings and walk with the leash in my left hand. Considering I carry my gun on my right side, this makes sense. Anyways, tonight I was in the local convient store buying some ciggerettes. Two younger guys were infront me cashing in a handfull of change for some dollar bills. They looked like your typical lowlife drug addicts. The store clerk told them that was the last time she was going to do that for them tonight. Anyways, one of the guys asked me for a ciggerette. I told him I was out and that's my reason for being in the store. Then he asked would I give him one after I bought a pack. I told him no and he said "I understand". Naturally, I took the 4 dollars and grabed it by my left hand and stepped her away to the side as if I was looking at the newspaper sitting in the rack. I just thought this was something worth telling you guys. And wouldn't you know after I drove off, I seen the two guys exchanging something with a black male down the street.

    Being more aware of your surroundings is always a good thing. After three years in armored, I don't have a choice anymore. I've gotten real good with hearing people coming up behind me before they get too close, and I am real good at using my entire span of sight before me. It has been a long, long time since someone has caught me completely off guard.

    I think I make the dog nervous sometimes. LOL!

    Absolutely, walk with confidence, keep your head up, watch how people are dressed, i.e. long coat in summer, and look for things out of place. In my case I have the extra advantage of being big and a little burly looking. Also I have a goatee, which automatically makes me my own evil twin.

    I’m the same way. My wife and kids get the biggest thrill when they sneak up on me because they can rarely do it but I do it to them all the time. The dog too. I learned to scan my surroundings as a military cop over twenty years ago and still have maintained many of my habits. I still will not take the same routes to were ever I go if I can avoid it. It’s what I was taught and it’s stuck with me. Besides, I know I’m always being followed but can never spot ‘em. I know there there man- I just know it. Those voices- oh, those voices in my head.

    Some habits are hard to break...

    While I was active duty USAF, you made a habit of carrying your stuff with your left hand to keep your right hand free to salute if need be. As a civilian, I still keep my right hand free for other reasons.

    My right hand is kept free as well. Wallet, keys, knife, etc. have all been moved to the left. Only thing on the right is my XD and my cell phone. Now that I think of it, maybe I should move the cell phone as well. I don't want to answer the XD by mistake!

    Unless of course an officer was approaching and then all of a sudden both hands were full hand you couldn't salute. I use to play with the O's head by doing things like that and then getting them to salute me. Ya, I was a baaaaad boy.
