Man held in rape of 74-year-old woman
By MATTHEW WATKINS
Eagle Staff Writer
A twice-convicted sex offender is in jail after police said they caught him in the act of raping a 74-year-old Cameron woman.
Cameron police officials said they found Willie Dwayne Whitfield, 38, naked and on top of a woman screaming for help in her bedroom early Thursday morning.
The assault is the second against an elderly woman in Cameron in just over a month. Another Cameron man has been arrested in the August assault, but police said they plan to reopen that investigation.
Police said the latest victim's daughter-in-law called police to the house on North Davis Avenue after she received an unusual call from the woman.
According to police, Whitfield broke into the woman's home about 4 a.m. and forced her to call her daughter-in-law in an effort to lure the younger woman to the house. The daughter-in-law could tell by the woman's voice that something was wrong and called police.
When Cameron police Cpl. Kris Stringer and Officer Bobby Nelms arrived at the home, they could hear the woman screaming.
"The victim was hysterical, frightened and shaking uncontrollably," Stringer said. "Picture a person as scared to death as possible."
The woman was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Health Center in Bryan. In addition to the sexual assault injuries, she had a head injury.
"It's unclear if he pushed her down and she hit her head, or if he hit her with a blunt object, but she was knocked unconscious," Stringer said.
Police said Whitfield had done yard work for the victim several months earlier and knew the victim's daughter-in-law lived nearby.
Whitfield has two convictions related to sex crimes, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was arrested in Fort Worth in 1995 after breaking into the house of a 26-year-old woman. In December 1997, he was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 39-year-old woman. He was found guilty of those charges in October 1998 and served six years in a Plainview prison.
"He is a very sick individual," Stringer said. "This ain't his first go-around. They just need to take this guy, lock him up and throw away the key."
Thursday's incident happened less than a mile from the street where the August rape occurred. The victim of the first rape identified another man out of a photo lineup, and he was arrested. DNA test results have not returned from the state crime lab.
Whitfield is being investigated in the first rape, but Cameron Police Chief Leonard Doskocil said officials had no reason to believe that the two incidents are connected.
Stringer said the two suspects fit similar descriptions.
"They are both black males with the same height and bald heads," he said. "[Whitfield] may be the guy, or he may not be the guy [who committed the first rape]."
Both men are being held in the Milam County Jail. Whitfield is charged with aggravated sexual assault of an elderly person. His bond is $200,000.
Stringer said the two rapes have shocked the small town of Cameron, about 45 miles northeast of Bryan. The town, with a population of 5,634, has 22 registered sex offenders in the area, according to the Department of Public Safety.
"A lot of people are scared," Stringer said. "Everyone has been talking about it, and they are shocked."
Stringer said he is trying to recover from the shock of what he saw. "It was very unexpected, it just blew my mind away," he said. "It was horrible."
Whitfield will be back on the street in about 5yrs. Instead of killing these's slim balls they will rehabilate the scum. Be OK but it never works. Once a scum bag gets that feeling of power over a child or elderly person they are done for as a human being. Why we don't get rid of them is beon me.

Well, this story was in my local paper - Cameron isn't that far from here...
Here is what propose. As part of his sentence every family member gets to kick him in the nuts once for each year of the victims age.
Sex offenders are lower then scum. They should be taken out back and put down.
