Off topic, but how do you know the deputy mayor who made this decision is a liberal? The article does not mention anything about political parties etc.

It sounds to me like its a personal thing. Maybe a neighbor or friend convinced him to do it and he wanted to prove that the "deputy" mayor really was a powerful position in this podunk town.

I agree. The article said that the mayor was on vacation so I am guessing the deputy mayor wanted to get this out of the way before the mayor came back.

The whole thing is very silly, whatever the reason.

Sounds to me like the guy just wanted to flex a little muscle while showing how kids first he can be. It will look good for someone wanting to further their political career
