    Secret Weapon?

I would like anyones opinion on this article. I dont put much faith in one article about one book and the fact that this story has been verified by the Bush Adminstration does little to calm my skepticism but I am interested.

Is this supposed technology help in locating the enemy or destroying them?

Sounds like tin-foil hattery to me.

War is pretty simple at its core. Find the bad guys (intel), engage and kill them (operations). There are groups who are better and worse at this, of course. We have lots of secret squirrels who do a pretty good job, but I don't know about any "secret weapons" that have somehow been revealed solely to Bob Woodward.

You could almost imagine the conversation Woodward had:

Woodward: "I understand you have a secret weapon that kills only people who hate the United States, is that true?"

    Bush Administration : "Sure"

Reminds me of the German Werewolf battalions at the end of WWII>

The secret weapon goes like this...

Soldier 1. Hey kid, you want some candy?
    Soldier 2. Interprets to kid.
Kid 1. Sure you bet, I speak perfect English.
Soldier 1. Really? Wow, you are pretty smart. I'll tell you what, come here tomorrow and I'll give you more candy.

    cycle repeats for two weeks....

Soldier 1. Hey kid, you wouldn't happen to know where some bad guys are do ya?
Soldier 2. He's not gonna sell out his own people for some candy, dumbass.
Kid 1. Shut up interpreter dude. You got Pokemon cards?

Whatever they are refering to, comparing it to the Manhattan Project seems like quite a leap, even if it accounted for 100% of the "drop in violence."

Its not a magic bullet or special gun.

I have a feeling its a combination of a more diplomatic interaction of troops on the ground with the locals combined with some kind of crazy James Bond kind of intelligence gathering and processing capabilities. It wouldn't surprise me if we found a way to trace, listen to and process every email, landline or cell phone call in Iraq... you know, like the govt. is trying to do here!

More likely advance facial recognition software, flying in the nose of a Predator Drone...

The drones "hover" on station for up to 36hrs, with a very high resolution camera under the nose, form 30-40K ft. They constantly scan areas of know insurgent activities, bolstered by good ground intel, and front and side mugshots of known leaders. The computer maps the faces, the camera/software finds them, and the missiles under the drones take them out with precision munitions. The drones are flown in 8hr shifts from the US, and the "pilots" go home to relax by the pool with their wives each night.

We can now read license plates, and through spectral analysis, determine the chemical composition of surfaces from space, guys... We can surely pick out a known face in a crowd, and send down hell's fury.

I was working with guys who were working on this stuff in 1997. USAF, LAAFB...

    Fantasic, deadly, effective shi_.

I seen on that show Future Weapons a "sound gun" thing that was being tested. I don't guess it was a secret being it was on a cable show but it was pretty cool. They did tests where they tried pinpoint people in a group. I think it was more a crowd control thing than a secret thing to get America haters....Pretty neat though

Well, I agree it sounds a little far fetched. For some reason things almost always tend to be much simpler than most would believe.

On the other hand, the military does always tend to have a few tricks up its sleeve. Think about the stealth bomber, they were flying that thing around the states for years before they revealed what they had. The same went for the U2 spy plane, until it got shot down it didn't exist. Those predator drones are just the tip of the iceberg.

Well, I wish they'd have given us some of these "deadly secret weapons" last year. Best thing we had were some fragile Ravens that kept crashing.

It sounds like more rhetoric surrounding the "war" that can be used as political fodder until the election. The more focus that can be drawn there, the less focus is retained on solutions/discussion on major domestic issues. Remember the movie "Wag the Dog"?

How is that none of the troops returning home from Iraq have not spilled the beans about this "awe inspiring" technology/strategy. I talked to a young Marine who described his time in Iraq as kicking down doors, avoiding IED's and trying to get the Iraqis to clean up there front yards.

    What's a Raven?

The Raven is a little man-portable UAV. Picture a little tiny Predator, or a big RC airplane.

They break left and right. Of course, they do expect infantrymen to fly them.

Why? Just because Woodward, who has previously been very critical of the Bush administration, has been granted a bunch of lengthy and in-depth interviews by Bush and his administration - a group who on the whole haven't been very quick to share the details of their internal deliberations?

Hmmm... I wonder if this could be some kind of PR ploy to paint the current administration as more successful then they actually are in hopes of salvaging a bit of credibility for their party before the upcoming elections.... Nah, couldn't be!

Nah. Nothing as complex as that. Just a simple equation.

    Woodward = reporter.
    Reporter = Full of crap
Therefore, Woodward = Full of crap
