My partner had cabaret rehearsal so I ended up meeting him downtown last night afterwards. He has a couple drinks so we left my truck in the parking garage overnight and he and I drove back in his car.

When I returned to get my truck today I was greeted with a very unwelcome sight. The driver side door on my truck was open slightly and the rear section of the door was standing wide open. Needless to say, my heart jumped up into my throat at the sight.

When I walked up to the door I saw that my survival bag was hanging half out of the door but that the metal cord that secures it in place was still intact and that the bag's locks were still in place. I did not see any damage to the vehicle at all. It just looked as though it had been opened up and rummaged through. I was certain I had locked it last night.

I then started looking through and checking everything else. My safe was unharmed and still shut. I did notice that an old cell phone, an old iPod shuffle, and a manicure set that was in the glove box was missing...along with ten bucks or so worth of change and singles from the ashtray and a mag-lite I had in the floorboard. Luckily I had transfered my GPS, pepper spray, and stun baton to the car before leaving the truck last night.

I am so glad I took the time to secure my packs with metal cord and had a secure location like the safe for my truck gun.

I did not waste my time with a police report but I did speak to the lot attendant. He said they had been having issues with people opening cars with slim-jims but hard increased security. The security guy has not shown up last night though. If I did not already have a yearly parking space in this particular garage I believe I would switch. I am really surprised the did not try to cut the bag loose. It must have been a "quick grab" type of scenario.

I did not have a camera with me so I re-created the way I found the vehicle for a couple pics. This is what I saw when I approached the vehicle. The pics make it easier to understand my description.

Glad it didn't turn out worse than it did.

I generally leave nothing in my car worth more than $1. It drives me crazy having to leave my gun in there.

I had my truck broken into a couple of weeks ago. They got my GPS and a camera. Busted through the passenger side window, but didn't open the door and therefore didn't sound the alarm.

Glad you had a gun safe. I won't leave a firearm in my vehicle. If they stole the truck, they'd get it sooner or later. I'd hate the thought of arming a thug.

As an aside, perhaps a few will learn from my foolishness: I always made a habit of removing the GPS from the dash and stowing it out of sight in the console. It was rather ridiculus though, since the mount was still on the dash - the crooks aren't that stupid. Remove or hide the mount too. Ironically, if I had left the GPS on the dash, they probably wouldn't have found the camera in the console. The truck wasn't rifled through, just a smash & grab. The other 3 cars in the lot that had the GPS stolen off the dash too.
