Man jailed in Wal-Mart robbery

A 22-year-old is in jail after a robbery attempt at WalMart Friday.
Thomas Scott is being charged with robbery and may face other counts, according to Aransas Pass Police Detective Jason Maley. Scott has lived throughout the area but currently resides in Corpus Christi.
He snatched the purse of Francis McFatridge, 79, who was shopping in the store.
“I tried to chase him but couldn't catch him because I'm almost 80,” McFatridge said.
According to Maley, Scott fled from WalMart's loss prevention personnel, eventually hiding in the grassy area behind Lowe's. Officers from Aransas Pass and Ingleside arrived and searched on foot while a helicopter from the Department of Public Safety searched by air.
Maley said the search was called off a few hours later after Scott's girlfriend positively identified him.
Swinkie's Gun Range, adjacent to the search area, had ceased operation while offers were searching. After the search ended, employees saw Scott emerge from the brush and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.
“Everything went pretty smooth,” Maley said.
According to McFatridge, Scott didn't have anything on him except one piece of evidence: a WalMart Gift Card that said “from Grandma to Amy.” Amy is the name of McFatridge's granddaughter.
Her purse and wallet were recovered in the store, though McFatridge said her money was missing.
Still, McFatridge said she's amazed at the efforts the Walmart employees and the police department went through to help her.
“I was shook real bad,” she said. “WalMart sure did take care of me. The police too. I'm proud of them.”
If you're hiding out after stealing someone's purse, don't head for the nearest shooting range.
