Thread: US Government: "Press 1 For English"

I think if we chase away all the light brown skinned people who talk funny, we better get ready to start paying a LOT more for people to do our sh*t work - like picking our vegetables, mopping our floors, cooking our food and mowing our grass.

Personally, I've been taken advantage of more by people in business suits than from illegal immigrants.

Seriously though, if we want to end illegal immigration, we’ve got to get our politicians to enact and enforce harsher penalties (jail) for people who hire them. If you take away the jobs, they’ll stop coming over here – then we can stop pissing away BILLIONS of dollars on a fence that doesn’t work.

I have no problem with establishing English as the official language for the country. English is the de facto standard language of the Internet.

Seeing all the wasted money, time and effort spent on bilingualism in Canada we should learn from the obvious mistakes.

In parts of Miami, you don't get the 'Press 1' option for English.

Why do people think that once illegals are given citizenship that they are going to continue working the "sh*t work" as you call it? They are doing the so called "sh*t work" because they can't clear the paperwork nor do they speak english well enough (in some cases) to interact with the business. Heck, if they learned English, filed the paperwork, let 'em come, but they sure as heck aren't going to continue doing the sh*t work! Nor should they!

While I agree that we should make English the official language, it is not currently so.

We need to choose whether or not we wish to accommodate other languages. If we decide we do want to accommodate, then "Press 1 for English" seems a reasonable compromise.

Well, I think I'm with TR on this one. Once you start "pressing 1 for English", what's the justification for excluding 3 for French, 4 for Chinese, 5 for Portugese... ?

If I travel to Rome, I don't expect them to speak English.

Well it does irritate the hell out of me whether it's rational or not. It makes me feel like I'm being squeezed out in favor of.....or that my nativeness has lost some of its priviledge. I don't have any problems with our brown skined brothers from south of the border. In my area they are for the most part hard working, responsable, and family oriented people. I don't like the fact that most likely 90% of them are illegal but are able to function in our society with out any difficulty when it comes to buying a home, a car, or credit cards for that matter or so it seems. Every time I roll up to my banks ATM and have to answer that question it pisses me off.

+1 This country sure does have an amazing way of slapping every other immigrant in the face. Why is Spanish the exception, but everyone else has to learn English? The only time I saw that stray was a business in NJ with a sign in the window that stated they spoke Polish.

BTW, I wonder who did the sh*t work before these people came along? Believe me, there are countless American citizens who would be glad to do the sh*t work. Sure, no one likes it, including the illegals, but one does what one must to feed their family. My grandfather did three sh*t jobs at once just to keep his family fed. He hated it, but he didn't piss and moan, just like countless other Americans didn't and wouldn't if it was paying the bills. He also expected to be paid more than $3 a day, too. Illegals can't do much about the low pay, and in a way it is also unfair to them because they are being taken advantage of. They have to buy gas, too, you know. And consider also that we're in a time when someone like my mother is begging for a job at Dairy Queen and they won't hire her. My mom, by the way, has three masters degrees, two bachelors degrees, and is only a few credits from a PhD. She's been out of work for two years and can't even get a sh*t job at the Dairy Queen were 3/4 of the staff doesn't speak English.

Also, just a reminder. While you are sending out emails to your reps to ask them to co-sponsor, please consider dropping Sen. Dole a thank you letter. If nothing else, it will help in the fight by letting those willing to stand up know that we're behind them, especially when we're voting. Maybe more will get the message.

I agree with english as the official language. As far as our brown skinned neighbors, well, since my first wife was about a quarter Mexican thus making my first two kids partly Mexican it would be rather foolish to have that prejudice toward Mexicans. I’m usually pretty neutral in my prejudices towards other people. If people come here to assimilate in America instead of trying to make America like their home country then I say welcome- just come here legally and follow our laws.

My grand father in law was full Mexican. He spoke only english and was a very successful Chef who was sought after. Could he have achieved his success by only speaking Spanish? I highly doubt it.
