My unit recently dedicated the rebuilt fitness center at our FOB in Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan. It was dedicated to the memory of Staff Sergeant Charles Browning, who was killed in action on June 1, 2007, while serving in Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry Regiment. A big, strong yet gentle man, the fitness center seems a fitting tribute to SSG Browning.
SSG Browning was a respected and well-liked corrections officer in civilian life, and left behind a wife and two young daughters when an IED claimed his life at the very early age of 31. One of my friends from the border mission served under SSG Browning and thought the world of him as a small-unit leader. SSG Browning had already served a tour in Iraq when he volunteered for the mission in Afghanistan.
I've attached some pictures from the dedication.
