Fun stuff. This is from a recent mythbusters episode. They're testing the myth of being able to cut down a tree with a machine gun. I wonder how much that mini-gun ammo costs? Even if it was only $.05 per round, at 3000 RPM, that would add up fast!

50 rounds per second...wow.
I saw that the other night. I chuckled to myself when they attempted to cut down a 18" diameter tree with a Thompson. That could take some time. They did manage to do it quite well with the minigun, but as stated above, it may have been cheaper to do it with the Thompson!
Pretty sure it's .308 or 7.62NATO. Either way you're looking at between $.50 and $.75 per round retail, which adds up to between $25 and $35 PER SECOND. If there was ever a case for reloading, this would be it.
However, it's interesting to note that the minigun SUV (or in this case the Army HumVee) is probably the most expensive line item for MB episodes that feature it, but not by much. The film stock, cast and crew salaries, rental of property, etc. would each be pretty close when calculated based on seconds of film used in an episode.
our mini-would fire 4,000 a minute on high rate of fire.I got to shoot "a few" rounds out of the front seat.

That was cool. I must have missed that episode.
Cool!
I like the warning on the front of that turret. Wouldn't have thought of that.
the mini-gun uses a firing pin/spring in the bolt assembly.as you rotate the barrels the rounds are fed into the chambers.yes they will go bang if the barrels are turned if the gun isn't cleared first.

whoa, i never knew a minigun would fire just by rotating by hand. thanks for that pic and info txpete!
loading the mini.it would go through that drum in nothing flat
