The energy is equal or less to some .40s if you're using the civilian ammo. Only the SS190 government ammo can pierce armor.
Also, upon striking target the rounds are so light that they tumble end-over-end, similar to a .22 in some ways. This does considerable damage, much like a fragmenting bullet, but without any overpenetration. Really, the SS195 or SS197, the two commerically produced civilian rounds, are ideal for personal carry. They are basically lighter, less-recoiling .40 calibers, or a 9 on steroids, however you think it.
You shouldn't have to worry about overpenetration any more than a .40 though. For a good chart of the muzzle energies, check out wikipedia.
