GUN CAPACITY
didn't we see that a few years ago outlawing 20 and 30 round magazines?
And aren't some states like California limiting a handgun with over 10 round capacity?
if that happens - it's bad but not the end of the world. look at all the CCW handguns with 5 or 6 round capacity....
TYPES OF GUNS
if they go after the AR type rifles is it really going to stop hunting with bolt action or semi action 5 round clips?
AGE OF OWNERSHIP
this could be an issue but it didn't stop what just happened - as i understand it the guns were owned by his parents - he was under 21 but that didn't stop him. Adult responsibility failed in this case.
SECOND AMENDMENT
if both houses of the Congress pass such a bill and the president signs it
then it takes two-thirds of the states to agree to ratify a change to the Second Amendment

the other way i see it is if the Supreme Court rules a different interpretation of the Second Amendment
that could happen when/if one of the conservative Judges retires and Obama puts a liberal on the Supreme Court

I guess I don't see a major impact any time soon.

In the midst of all the anti-gun rhetoric, isn't it strange that no one ever mentions how many mental hospitals and asylums have been closed over the past 30-odd years, and how many people with mental problems are now walking the streets? Of course, it would be "insensitive" and politically incorrect to bring that up.

Yeah the disarmerment of the United States is going to be systematic one step at a time thing. Historically the recent presidents have used their executive order powers more and more especially in recent years. Its not CRAZY to think that such and order will be proposed even accepted into our growing anti-gun culture. ANd Im not even saying like an executive order to ban guns, but executive order for Assualt Weapons, 10 Max Capacity, Waiting Periods, Etc. These things they could slap on us federally and we wouldnt be able to get mad about it because "we get to keep the guns we have at least wa wa wa"


And PROPS to the OP for reading Malcolm Gladwell. I read BLINK and dude writes fantastic books. OP do you read "Robert Greene" books as well?

My personal take on this. I believe, wrongly I hope, that they will bring back the Assault Weapons ban and make the sale of such rifles illegal. I don't think they will make people give them up, but will at least make them be a registered item. I see them making the handgun situation about the same as during the Clinton ban. That is they will make all magazine capacities at ten rounds or less. I do not think they will do much of anything concerning standard bolt/lever action rifles or what we would consider longer barreled shotguns. Again, I hope I am full of it on this, but I don't think so. I can see this crap legislation getting passed within the next six months. JMHO.

I think it's actually quite simple.DC,NYC and the tri-state area,Philly,Chicago,southern Cali,(and on a side note places guns aren't allowed to be carried like Luby's cafeteria,school and political shootings),etc,what do they all have in common?Strictest gun control,highest crime,and run by Liberals.What part is so hard to comprehend by anybody with 1/2 a brain and common sense?Feelgood laws do nothing but destroy the whole concept of improvement,the welfare system should raise some flags there.

You can also bet your butt that after this last whackaloon's stunt,the AWB is on the table now where it was just sitting at the table before.OMG,he used a Bushy,an X-ray defeating Glock and Sig,Oh Lord we must do something.If I lived in the above areas I think I might have my mental state taxed to the point of losing it,but I don't get this last dude's issue so far.

Connecticut had most of the gun control measures already in place by state law. The only person at blame here (and it hasn't even been mentioned by the media) was the mother of the shooter. She was the only person who could have stopped this mess by properly securing her weapons from a son who she knew had mental and/or social issues. Can we pass an effective law against negligence and stupidity? She paid the price first.

You're kidding.... right? I mean, you're on a gun enthusiast website and you're calling for a ban on a class of rifles. How is that possible?

First off, there never was an "assault weapons" ban in 1994. What was passed into law was a ban on 19 semi-automatic rifles that looked ominous. Not one of those rifles was an "assault rifle". And the murderer in Newtown did not use an "assault rifle". He used a semi-automatic rifle.

People, learn your terminology and don't fall into the trap of using Josh Sugarmann's lingo which has permeated the media for over twenty years. None of these arms are "assault rifles". They are functionally no different than this rifle;

My bad. I obviously over read the first part, which is something I rarely do. Not a knee jerk reaction on my part but a bad mistake and for that I apologize to the the gentlemen to whom I was responding as well as others on this thread.

A big "oops" on my part for sure. Now I think I had better find a comfortable dark hole and crawl into it.

There was no tipping point after Columbine. No TP after Virginia Tech. Will there be one now after Newtown? Maybe, I hope not, and I doubt it.
