The facts, how refreshing.
I saw this while I was reading up on the Seattle shooting on The Blaze and realized it was something that really needed to be disseminated. It certainly seems to take the sails out of all the gun control advocates who say that concealed carry never saves anyone or stops violent crime.
In my mind, this is a must read for all gun owners and I would really like it if we could get the gun grabbers to read it too.
Take a look and what do you guys think?
November 2012 Defensive Gun Use Report
The numbers in that article are horribly inaccurate. In fact, they are way too low. Criminologist Gary Kleck analyzed National Crime Victimization Survey data and found that in the 1990ís guns were used about 2.5 million times annually for self-defense. That's about 6,850 times a day. The number of self defense stories involving guns that get reported on in various media outlets is a joke.
I agree that the media's output is extremely low and that's why I signed up over there and started paying more attention locally to hear of stories I could send to them.
I will say Kleck's numbers were shaky when he did the study (his methodology leaves a lot to be desired) and that was at the peak of the crime wave (mid 80's to early 90's). There was a great Duke research paper about how easy it was for the number to be drastically off with his methodology.
I would guess that his numbers are somewhere around half of what the studies showed. Then you have to realize that many of the stories he considered DGU's would never make the media anyway (i.e. gun drawn and displayed, bad guy leaves, no law enforcement call is made). We'll never get a fair shake in the news but we can cover as many stories as possible.
If you hear of any or see any why not check to see if they have it posted and if they don't have it up send them the details.
That's all I'm doing unless I decide I'm a famous writer and want to post the stories myself.
Even if Kleck's numbers were double the actual numbers that is still 1,250,000 times a year people defended themselves with guns. And even if the current crime rate cuts those numbers in half it's still well north of 1/2 a million times a year people defend themselves with guns. The numbers are still much higher than most realize or the media will admit.
