Question Minimum age to purchase in Kentucky?

    Hello all,

I'm a bit confused by the gun laws in Kentucky, and I'm unsure whether the actual minimum age to purchase a handgun is 18 or 21.

According to The Brady Campaign (I know they're probably not your favorite people around here, but I figure they aren't lying about how young you can purchase), only federal licensed dealers are prohibited from selling handguns to persons under 21.

Does this mean that those under 21, but over 18, in Kentucky are restricted to buying handguns from gun shows and private transfers?

I'm aware a CCW permit will have to wait until I'm 21, but in Kentucky it's legal for an unlicensed person to have a gun in their glove compartment. I also would like time to practice; I'd prefer to be intimately familiar with a weapon before even considering concealed carry.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, so if you need legal advice, consult with a lawyer.

Your statement about those under 18 is not correct, near as I can tell. Except for very limited circumstances (training, supervised target practice, etc.), those under 18 cannot possess a handgun at all. From 18 to 21 it's probably what you said above; can be possessed, but must be acquired by a legal method NOT including a Federally licensed dealer. From 21 up, a person can buy from the dealer or any other legal source.

Again, get legal advice from lawyer-type folks if you intend to act upon it. The local police, state police, or county sheriff can also be good resources for info on guns. They can also be as clueless as any other anonymous Internet keyboard commando, too, so consider yourself warned.

Oops, you're entirely correct about under 18, I meant to type under 21, over 18. Sorry about the confusion; I've corrected the original post.

I was curious in particular about what sources a gun could be purchased from other than a federally licensed dealer. Are private transfer and guns shows the only two? I'm new to the sport, and both sound like a somewhat intimidating way to purchase for one who doesn't know much.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

You can also purchase over the internet as well, but technically that falls under an FFL purchase since no internet dealer will sent you a gun dierectly, it must go to an FFL.

In the glorious state of Kentucky, You have to be 21 to purchase a hangun from a FFL dealer aka " gun stores". However, you can be "gifted" a handgun from a person over 21. Therefore, private sales are perfectly legal. Gun Shows are your best bet.
