What type do you want to compete in? That is first question to answer. A Colt Peacemaker is great for S.A.S.S. but not for P.P.C.
I don't know what types there are. I can't seem to find a basic enough reference to find out either. All I can find ar articles that assume you already have a certain amount of knowledge.
try NRA.com. They can help you with the basic fundamentals and rules.
Well, I'd suggest you look for any local competitions and see if there is a way to go watch a match. Ask around at the local gun/sport shops, watch bulletin boards and newspapers, call and talk to local shooting instructors, and if you have any "shooting" friends/acquaintances that compete, ask if you can attend and watch the next match they shoot.Quote:

There are often a few folks at each match that are willing to take new shooters/competitors under their wing and show them the ropes. Once in awhile, they'll even offer to lend you their gun and gear and let you shoot a stage, just to get a feel for the action!

My guess is you are talking about one of the two listed sites, IDPA or USPSA. Most USPSA beginners, like myself, start in the Production division. Which basically means any standard iron sighted production made firearm meeting the requirments set forth by the USPSA. I shoot a Springfield 9mm XD Tactical. Normally in that division I see XD's, Glock's a couple H&K's and recently the new M&P. I don't shoot IDPA because the rules are different and I'm not a fan of some of their procedures, but many enjoy that sport as well.
I'm no "pro", but there are a few "out of the box" guns that would be okay as a first. I think the Glock 34, XD's long slides, CZ's, S&W M&p's, and the H&k's. Again just some ideas and i"m no pro by any stretch. I'm going to start out with my H&k p2000. Good luck! Happy shooting!:smt023
