Moving forward on IDPA shooting

Okay, so this is a newbie report. A couple weeks ago an old friend gave me part of his Sunday afternoon to run me through some IDPA stage commands, and last weekend I visited some at the state IDPA championships. Yesterday I relaxed some of my "conserve ammo" restraints and for the first time practiced a smooth, albeit slow, draw from concealment and put 2 in the middle, 1 up top. At about 10-15 yards I could generally hit a peice of printer paper torn in half, one for each section.

My training goal is to shoot "Marksman" the first qualifier of next year. Wish me luck and hold me accountable to training! :)

Good luck, You are off to a good start. One thing that will really help is dry fire practice.

I have three IDPA targets spaced out on my garage wall. I put on my holster and gear and with an empty gun, I draw and line up the sights,move to the next target etc.

I have some red painted dummy rounds that I practice magazine changes with. You can practice almost anything that you do at the match except actual shooting.

I would also recommend brian Enos book and some of Matt Burketts DVD's especially the IDPA one but they are all very good.

Sounds like your on the right track. I hoping one day to do it also but have to get the back fixed. Once that happens I'll inquire more about it. Your very lucky to have such a nice friend to help you get started. Good Luck and I'll wait to see you on a magazine cover.

Well, so far I have all fingers and toes intact; my basic definition of a good shooting time!

However, I've started to tense up on some shoots and am pulling the shots way down. The classifier is Jan 13th so I need to get my head and trigger finger back in the game. I've got a good "IDPA load" which meets the minimum PF plus some and I've got a lot of brass ready to take it. Just need to get my heinie in gear and practice more.

I've read the BE book and am practicing some of it. However, most of his stuff is still way past my level. However, the book is on loan to a friend who *is* ready for it and he'll be making great progress in the next few months. OTOH I have some notes from a post Bruce Gray did a while back and that, with the lowest level BE stuff, should keep me busy until the classifier. It'll be a test of how much good info I can absord and how much discipline I have.

Drat, never had much discipline....

I'll see what I can do. I'm also making a wider grip for my 1911 and talking to folks who know a lot more about them. Again it goes back to "plenty of resources needing plenty of discipline".

Well, in spite of not training nearly as much as planned and letting my head jump out of the game totally in stage 3 I made marksman today. Stage 1 was my best; slow at 61 seconds but only 1 point down. Stage 3 was fast and many point down, and just a mess of a shoot.

But I did it and came away with as many fingers and toes as I had started with. :)
