Right now it's anything you can find. I use Remington or Winchester, for the most part.
Well there are a lot of threads about what gun to use but I could find nothing about ammunition. I'm going to an IDPA orientation in a couple weeks and am taking whatever off the shelf 40 cal fmj ammo I can find but I was curious
1) Is there a preferred brand, bullet weight?
2) Is there such a thing as the fabled lower recoil yet still accurate round?
Thanks

If you are going to get serious about IDPA, you need to look into reloading or it will get expensive in a hurry
question #1. I shoot Berry 180gr plated. but I also reload. factory loads- What ever you can find as guardrail stated
#2 In IDPA you have a "power factor" you have to worry about when you get into low recoil loads. but Federal hydra-shoks are a reduced recoil round that is accurate
You guys aren't kidding whatever I can find. I was able to get a couple boxes of 165 grain locally but the shop is now out. I was talking to some folks about reloading, they said it is now about the same as factory ammo was so hopefully that will start to drop sooner than later. Thanks for the help.
Talked to a LGS ownner/gunsmith who had taken some Tulammo apart to see what was in it. He said it looked like they had also swept up the floor and added that into the powder, saying it looked like tiny bits of cardboard mixed and trash in it.
But he also said there is no reason not to shoot it, in most guns. He might be hesitant to shoot it is a gas operated gun as it might blow debries into the ports of the action.
You need to check with your IDPA rules (some are more/less restrictive) for your local match, you need a certain grain and velocity which is used in a math formula to denote it's "power factor". Also, I think you have to use defense loads... not fmj practice ammo.
FMJ is fine, nothing against it. Any load at or around factory velocity will make power factor just fine.
That should have the accurate info for anything other than the revolver classes. There was a rule change that came out for the power factor of one of the revolver divisions but I do not recall what the change was.
