Groton - Police are investigating a shooting that occurred around 1 a.m. Friday in the area of Gungywamp Road and Sailfish Lane, near the entrance to the Navy Exchange Dolphin Mart and the Naval Federal Credit Union bank.
Groton Town Police officers responded to a report of shots fired, and later found a man at the scene.
An investigation revealed that the man, who was driving his vehicle, was confronted by two unidentified people who opened fire on him and his car.
The man, who was armed and carried a valid pistol permit, returned fire and the suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored, American-made sedan, possibly a Buick or Oldsmobile, with shot-out windows and possible bullet holes on the passenger side.
No injuries were reported.
Lt. John W. Varone would not comment on the extent of the gunfire exchange.
”There were more than a few shots fired,” he said.
Varone said the name of the man is not being made public.
Police are checking area hospitals and emergency rooms for people being treated for gunshot wounds.
Gungywamp Road was closed until 8:20 a.m.
Charles Barnum Elementary School, located near the crime scene, opened on time.
Anyone with information about the incident should call Groton Town Police at (860) 441-6712.
