Does anyone know if there are crime statistics for home invasions in the United States...?

No, but I read about 2-4 home invasions a month just in Houston alone (in the Houston Chronicle). Most are probably drug related, and the newspaper never runs an article when more info is known - they only run the initial article.

What is scary is that sometimes, the invaders are dressed similiat to police and even yell police when they come in.

Several weeks ago the Wife and I were in Las Vegas having some fun. One evening while waiting for her to get ready I was watching TV and along came a commercial for Roll Down Shutters. The type we have here in Florida for hurricanes.
They weren't selling them for storm protection but for (Get READY) Protection from Home Invasions. Freaked me out.
I guess Crime is rampant there.

Yes Thank You js, it was one wild ride!
Needless to say, I'd be hard to convince that I don't need a firearm in the home!

No idea. It is getting a lot worse around here. Right now, I live in a development and the cars are currently being hit. However, my neighbors are dumb and leave stuff like laptops and digital cameras in their cars, so eventually the home invasions will start when the criminals start thinking about what could be in the houses if they leave stuff like that in the cars.

Actually, last summer I had a break in while my parents were on vacation. I heard someone at about 3:00 AM at my door, so I went down the steps with two guns, my Sig and my Smith & Wesson. By the time I got downstairs, he'd popped the door open, but upon coming in all he saw was that stainless six inch barrel on my Smith and he closed the door on his way back out!

My parents make me park my car out at the bottom of the driveway because they hope the back end of it will make criminals think twice, which I think is funny! LOL! I have NRA stickers all over it, a huge blue Sig sticker, my plate frame is metal with bullet holes in it, I have three holsters on my front seat, and old gun magazines and catalogues from work in the back seat. And all my neighbors call me when they hear strange noises because I'm the only one in this section with guns (and they only know for sure because I do open carry to and from work...of course they only speak to me when they need help, I'm the neighborhood freak because I carry a gun, imagine that).

I don't know the stats in my area but Texas has an online database of registered sex offenders, searchable by zip code or map view. :smt067

Not all home invasions end well (http://www.twincitiescarry.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2030)
from the Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/462/story/544269.html

Quote: Two thieves pose as utility workers
A St. Paul couple and their daughter feared for their lives as they were bound, terrorized and robbed. No one has been arrested.
Myron P. Medcalf, Star Tribune
Last update: July 11, 2006 – 12:13 AM

The two men showed up at a St. Paul home Friday, said they were from the gas company and had come to check out a gas leak.

The woman said she hadn't smelled anything, but when she turned around one of the men had a long silver gun pointed at her husband's head. The second man put a gun to her head and demanded money, she said.

They were then bound with duct tape and terrorized. When their 14-year-old daughter arrived home, she was tied up, too.

"We said our goodbyes," said the woman, who asked to be identified only as Anna because she fears for her safety. "We thought they'd kill us."

Anna said the men, who wore hard hats and vests, repeatedly asked, "Where is it? Where is it?"

She said her husband gave the men more than $1,000 -- all the family had saved.

Anna said she and her family moved into the house in the 400 block of Winslow Avenue just a month ago. Investigators suspect that the men had targeted the house, but not the couple, said police spokesman Tom Walsh.

While the men searched the house for money, drugs and jewelry, they checked in with someone else over a two-way radio, Anna said.

"We're in, we're in," one of them said into the radio, Anna said.

Frustrated, the men forced Anna's husband, who speaks only Spanish, upstairs. When Anna told the men her teenage daughter was on her way home, Anna was taken upstairs and bound hand and foot along with her husband.

When the daughter arrived, the men pointed a gun at her, too, and forced her upstairs.

"They told my husband, 'More pesos or we'll kill your daughter,' " Anna said.

The men tied up the daughter and, Anna said, her family prepared for the worst.

"They said, 'Don't look at us; don't call the police,' " she said.

The men duct taped everyone's mouth shut before they left. Anna managed to free herself and called 911.

No one has been arrested. Investigators believe this was an isolated incident, but they remind residents to ask for credentials before letting anyone into their homes, Walsh said. The men drove a white van with windows and a ladder on top. Anyone with information can call police at 651-291-1111.

Anna said one of the men was short and stocky and the other was tall and stocky. Both suspects appeared to be in their late 20s or early 30s, she said.

"One was sweaty and very nervous," she said. "The other one looked like he'd done this before."

Anna said she's glad her family wasn't harmed.

"We feel like God gave us another chance," she said. "We're thinking to ourselves that he left us for a reason."

The scary part here is: What DO you do? How do you prevent this type of scenario? The woman turned back around and the men had a gun to her husband's head. Ouch. there is NO time to act then. Also note the two way radio (possibly to getaway car?).

I'd say in this case, the people did the only thing they could do, co-operate.
