I've been back at Galco for a week now, and Bill King (Old Padawan) has somehow managed to convince me that shooting can be fun, despite my better judgment.
While we are hesitant to step into an arena that has become the sole province of our great good friend milquetoast, we would like to have a zombie-shooting contest to coincide with the Mexican holiday of Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos in Spanish. Since Day of the Dead doesn't roll around until November 1st, we have plenty of time to prepare (and to step on milquetoast's toes).
The course of fire - El Zombidente - requires three zombie targets, obtainable through www.zombietargets.net.
As we all know, zombies require head shots to be officially and permanently consigned to the afterlife. As we further know, the farther you are from a zombie, the safer you are, since they have to be at touching distance to eat your braaaaaaaaiiiinnnnssss.
The contest itself is pretty simple. Using your favorite centerfire handgun - rimfires lack sufficient penetration to ventilate tough zombie skulls - you must make three head shots with three consecutive rounds on three separate zombies. Sounds easy, right? But the winner will be the shooter who pulls off three-for-three zombie head shots at the greatest distance from standing unsupported. Hits have to be in the "brain box" scoring ring of the zombie targets
El Zombidente is normally shot in the fashion of El Presidente, with three targets arranged side-by-side. But if your range only allows one target at a time, never fear. Just roll out one target, take your shot, reel it back in and roll out the next to the same distance. You still only get three shots at three flesh-eating craniums.
Seven yards? Ten? Twenty-five? Fifty? With all the rust from Afghanistan, I'm currently only good for maybe a five yard head shot, but I should have the rust scraped off by November.
As a fun side match, not to count for score, run the same course of fire with a rifle and a shotgun. With rifles, the head shot rule applies, but with shotguns, any hit above the shoulders counts.
So order your targets, start practicing your trigger press, and be ready for Dia de los Muertos and El Zombidente. Results must be in by November 28th, since we all know the zombies must be extinguished 28 days later.
There will be a prize for the top zombie slayer, and another prize for the best zombie-killing picture (as judged by Bill and me). So have your camera ready, along with your targets for Dia de los Muertos!
