back up gun

hypothetical with my preference twist.

hiking/hunting in alaska. and a four inch revolver is back up of choice.

is a .454 casull enough? or would one go with the .460 s&w? trying to stay away from the .500, but if one thought it to be necessary i would listen...

any thoughts?

At that point I want the biggest, baddest cartridge I can accurately send downrange.

The .454 Casull should handle everything just fine if you can shoot it. I would practice a lot with what ever my choice was. Good luck.

If the .454 Casull can't handle it, then nothing else would be able to in my opinion. Having said that though, I'm not all THAT familiar with the bigger calibers like that...

i agree. i thought the .454 casull could handle anything one might come across in the US as well. like i said this is all hypothetical. i thought the .460 s&w was overkill(no pun intended). i just wanted to see if others agreed. thanks for the feedback!

I don't know man. I jsu tread an aticle on big game handgun hunting in Alaska and it took a vet hunter, 4 Shots with a .5 to take it down. Oh and there were two others with rifles that loaded 6 more into the big bear. I mean those bears and moose are huge! I would perosnally feel safer with a .5 and come on... for only a few hundred more why wouldn't you get a hand cannon??!?!?!

Do your research... The 460 S&W Magmum has more energy than the 500. Flatter shooting, greater penetration. Buy the X-Frame. And you can actually afford to practice with the 45 Colt.

My dad has a Taurus Raging Bull .454 Casull, and what a beast! Huge gun, but it can deliver some firepower...if you need more then that I suggest bringing a howitzer...

He uses it as backup when deer hunting. I have no doubt that it would put down a bear.

Always carry enough gun to get the job done. That in mind, get the .460 because you can load .454 or .45lc into it for cheaper range shooting. The .460 is gonna kick in a 4" gun
